Paris Film Composer Challenge (CLOSED)

Hello Michael,
I’ve only been using reaper for about five weeks now and I have never used a daw, So still have lots to learn.
I think the sound design is supposed to be good, The sample side of it I think is limited and the music notation is within its midi editor, Its not really designed for complex scores like muse score. Hopefully some of the guys on the hub may be using reaper and would be a lot more helpful then me

@ed.harper thanks. I could not answer I think today we should ask in livestream to do a download correction. I did put on my YouTube channel a video why I like to use the Riller Violin Harp in later takes. I mainly use for historic reasons old vintage instruments that are unusual but made exact in this time arround 1920. For example heavy use of Martenot Equipment. Search Ondo Martenot and Martenot Speakers. So for the moment I am unsure to use piano. if it is allowed to have more than one composer and artist it will be great. I work so much alone just for footsteps that I am happy to do things with others together.

Do they make the challenge longer? I thought 26.03 is the final submission. Anyways time for a behind the scenes video. Because special recordings with people that have no relation to music. Its a Brian Eno style….

I think Christian mentioned that the deadline was going to be extended on “Can You Hear Me Now” (the podcast) either last week or the week before.

Maybe someone can help me out. In my original Challenge video I use this recording for the timeline video-art to make a bridge to modern composers. I did record this part Midside Stereo. But in the Challenge I use the Martenot Palme Speaker what change sound drastically.
Anyways I like to support this part with a E-Bow Gadget for Guitars and Bass. Compliant to the Context Brian Eno did made recordings with people that have no relation to music and mangled them to aAtmospheric music sound. Does someone of You Own an E-Bow and like a collaboration. @christianhenson did allow this yesterday explicit. I own an E-bow and at least the idea is to support this part with other bows in a non musical trio.
Someone have an e-bow and do not play it in a perfect style. Just use it with all buzzing and so on…
Here is this part done in an extra video. Please let me know… Thanks in advance Daniela

A post was split to a new topic: Alternative gui

Hello all

These submissions have been smashing and really inspired, it’s been a great challenge and the workshops have been amazing for me. I have learnt a huge amount and really enjoyed making this and would love to share it here, but completely understand if you feel it’s a bit much to watch everyone’s submissions - it’s a long piece! Hope everyone who is giving this a shot is enjoying it as much as I have… mine is very simple, but still needed a lot of paper and head scratching…! Big thanks again Ed - I did use your audio, and I fully fessed up in my little note with my submission. It was great to be able to upload the whole thing without the missing sound.

All the very best everyone

Final submission. Workflow: Composed and arranged in Musescore. Using old Laptop MacBook Pro 2015 Monterey. Inside Reaper (4 months experience) did the Sounddesign. Several recordings done with acoustics instruments.

Did integrate another de facto standard sound arts project. Because it is Creative Commons CC-BY-SA sounds are used by a lot of sound designers. I did google map these 1 hours recording exact to the the places where @Simon-Admin was doing his documentary videos and did edit very short pieces of this exact positioned original sounds and mangeled them to a natural organic sound instrument… This was the most fun. Did contact the author Arthur Gilly for upgoing projects like Behind the Scenes Videos and Live Events.

Did research the background in the internet archive

Project: https://soundsof.paris

Inspired by this microtonality article I did use a very different tuning:

The Scales I did found inside the Scale Archive 5000 Scales are there for free download and I use some since some Years.

Here is my final submission from yesterday:

I like to answer to a comment that was concerned as rude and meant to support and positive from my side of view because the @KG70 for me was one of the best submissions in all the challenge. From side of composition and how he did choose the sounds of instruments. Because I do not understand and speak one word of the English language I will answer in German. My native language and culture is Romanian but if I answer in my language it will complicate things much more.

He did write:

“Here goes nothing” is an idiom used to express, often with a hint of humor or resignation, that someone is about to try something new, challenging, or risky despite expecting little to no success. I enjoy these challenges, as I learn, enjoy the general support of the network, respect the amazing level of professionalism and talent amongst the network; and therefore with my amateur levels, I expect nothing, other than enjoying the process and positive feed back!

Clarity to your statement ‘You just did not balance in my mind’ would be nice, as in my mind it seems quite rude! And I feel ‘balancing’ is a major part of the challenge; as in the balance of music and dialogue! And again as for ‘This can be done by the Audio department’, I feel needs some clarity! The emphasis of the challenge, for me, is to present a near professional submission; I certainly have no audio department behind me !!!

Thank you for your time in providing some clarity and background to your musical journey! I did feel that your message may have been lost in translation, hence my withdrawal of my post! May I wish you good luck in finding the funds for a Neumann microphone and in achieving your 10,000 listening hours!

Best regards and stay tuneful!!!

It will not happen in my live I reach this 10000 hours anymore. I am just to old. I got one Neumann U67 and a U87 but will not be able to use them much, because they are difficult to handle and need big rooms or a hall to give a perfect sound what they are made for in this old times.
It makes not really sense in a common home studio todays in a most very small room. OK I got them very cheap in a superb condition from a close to 80 years old “Tonmeister” that give up his big studio and is a friend of my husband. He just wish to see his vintage equipment in good hands. My husband did offer lots to Christian to take over, but never his mail was answered.

I feel some things are made and designed to be used and admired over the ages! To some point we are just custodians of such objects, preserving them and ensuring they provide joy for others further down their working life! Maybe it is time to say goodbye to your U67 and U87, and find them a respectful home, and also, fund a future purchase that can serve a purpose in your home studio!

Take care!

Really pleased that this challenge got extend to include Saturday. This was never getting finished otherwise! Great subject as well the Debussy and Satie are fantastic composers. It was a bit of challenge writing all that Music.

Would Be interested to know how everyone approached writing so much. The idea of orchestrating this seemed a bridge too far. I decided to keep it really simple just piano (East West Bosendorfer 290), Reverb (Black hole Eventide) and EQ(Kirchhoff).

Managed to get my entry in with just 4 minutes to spare :grimacing:
Could definitely have done with more time to finesse this but I’m just glad I made the deadline. Watching the upload line creep along as the clock ticked by was a bit fraught…
