Attic Grand Composer Challenge (Closed)

Christian is an incredible inspiration to me. Even if I produce shite for the rest of my life, I know it is going to be fine shite.

Thank you.

Thanks for listening Ali, and for you positive feedback.

The effects aren’t PianoRack - for whatever reason I try to limit myself to free tools when working on these challenges.

Perhaps more detail than you wanted, but there are several layers which fade in/out:

  • The Attic Grand, with some automation on the “HAIR” parameter
  • 100% wet output of the Attic Grand fed into a big reverb (Valhalla Supermassive)
  • The reverb fed into a tube distortion that came with my DAW - it’s this that produces the big chords at the end
  • Noise

That’s interesting to hear Ed. Did you know what sound you were looking for before you started and then tweak the settings until you got it, or did you come across a series of settings and think, “That’s nice? I’m going to use that.” ?

Quite often I end up doing the latter.:slightly_smiling_face:

My entry for the Attic Grand Composing Challenge.
I had my first ever piano lesson last week. When I got home I saw the challenge video and decided to see what I could create whilst practicing for my next lesson. If anything, I’ve put loads of practice in this last week. :grinning:

I like the decent feel of loss, meandering through the lovely harmonics. The cover work is relating to the fabulous Richard Clayderman special

I like the pathos in your piece expressing, that to my eyes beneath all the encountered sadness, there is a powerful sense of life ongoing.

I like especially the narrative quality of the special slow movements and tonal runs in your piece. Lovely track!

That’s a good question - trying to answer has given me pause for thought, as I hadn’t really considered how the composing process works for me.

I guess the truth is a bit of both, but a good portion of it unconscious; having decided on a story for the piece, it all seemed like the right thing to try at the time.

Hi

This was a great challenge! So much fun, and that Attic Grand is so so lovely.

My entry is kinda sad, a little plaintiff, ever so slightly optomistic (after all, those of us who already have the Grand will continue to be able to make lovely music with it)… Written with four copies of Attic Grand each playing a different part (or perhaps one instrument played by an octopus). I even got a bass sound out of it with some judicious EQ’ing. There’s a bit of Piano Rack FX in there, and finally I washed the whole thing in masses of splosh, because of course.

This is my entry to the Vaults Piano challenge. It’s called Lisa’s Lament (as in the Mona Lisa).

Hi everyone!

Great to see such innovation being sparked by The Crow Hill gang. Thank you!

Goodbye, Attic Grand!

I created bass and treble lines using the plugin’s own settings (70 rev and 50 offset for the bass; 75 rev and 55 offset for treble). I also switched up the reverse and offset settings to max and increased the splosh for a third line of high sustained textures to add some further interest. A great plug-in, thanks Crow Hill!

I did want to ask how anyone got a grand piano into the attic …

Lovely piece tuner1993. Hits the brief right on the head for me; so sad!

Hi Everyone, here’s my entry for the challenge, I managed to put some FX on the attic grand to make it sound more experimental and completely different sounding. Hope this doesn’t get misjudged, as I understand that not everything in this track can be recognized as a piano, but I swear it is! If it is needed, I can share a video of my DAW and the whole process behind the creation of the track! Hope you enjoy it!
