Attic Grand Composer Challenge (Closed)

Thanks CHC - these challenges are great!!

It was so tempting to reach in the sound library for a bass or flute etc… but instead just played about with FX and EQ to get different tones out of the attic grand.

There’s a little morse code message in the notes at the end for fun.

Cool to hear all the ideas using the same instrument.

Hello everyone, and thanks to Crow Hill for creating this challenge!

It has been great listening to different submissions, and it was definitely challenging composing a piece for solo piano that I was happy with. Aside from the Attic Grand, I only used a Dragonfly hall reverb, some EQ and some (very subtle) compression.

This piece is beautifully sorrowful Tuner1993. Must be a contender I think.

There are so many great submissions! I don’t envy the team picking the winner.

Hi everyone, here’s my submission.
A simple piece that I called Silent Farewell.
I hope you like it.

It took me a full week to puzzle out how to make this crisp sexy beast of an instrument sound glum without being cloying or a dirge. I ended up with a boom-bap-ish rhythm, subtle discordant harmonics in the underscore (i.e. faffing with volume & layers), and mixed the audio a little darker than normal. Overall it’s probably more convoluted than it needs to be; I wanted to fully put it through its paces and still meeting the brief… Let me know it I got there.

I present to you my send off for the free and fantastic Attic Grand.

I left it quite late but I’m glad I managed to finish it, good luck everyone.

This has a special ambiance and movements – I like the decisive deep parts, which contribute to the plug-in’s speciality quite well.

Hi everyone,

listening to all of your compositions has been quite enlightening (and intimidating, to be honest), but here we go… I tried to explore the whole range of the plugin and its onboard effects, so I didn’t use anything else (apart from a limiter at the end). It’s a bit sloppy in parts, but I professionally masked it by creating a simple video to go with it…

Hi to all the participants, Hi Simon and big hi to the Crow Hill team

I’m Nico, French composer /producer, and it’s my first participation, and I’m very happy to be a part of this October challenge.

I have to admit that I heard from this challenge today, because I want to buy the Glass Strings VST that is pretty much amazing, and that I’m a big fan of the Crow Hill Company, even if I couldn’t afford their products until now. Fan for a long time of Chris Henson. So it’s pretty much a 1:00 O’clock in the morning improvisation, and I hope you’ll like it

I only use the Attic plugin, nothing else, apart from my mastering chain. No effects added.

Big bravo to all the participants and your composition that I took time to listen to.

Have a great week everybody, long live Crow Hill Company, and now I’ll finish my night in discovering the Glass Strings

As a newbie to the world of DAWs this has been great learning experience for me.
I have enjoyed the challenge, even if it did keep me awake at night!

My take on the brief -

The Phoenix From The Attic
I couldn’t see this as a true farewell to the Vaults Attic Grand. It will live on for those who keep it in their Vaults and continue to write for it. It will rise again, new with each composition, as the Phoenix rises anew from the ashes.

The music and video drew me in, sometimes all you need is that stripped back sound without processing the life out of things, nicely done.
