New 'Facent' Composing Challenge (CLOSED)

After a brief hiatus in order to better code the site for more reliable submissions processes we are back with some entertainment of a factual nature for you to make more entertaining.

Crow Hill challenges provide our “fellowship” (basically anyone who wants to take part) with an opportunity to practise, experience, and cut their teeth with real-life experiences of working to picture, to brief and under a deadline. All undertaken in the relatively undercover safe-space that is our resources hub. It’s an opportunity to learn new things, learn from mistakes, and deal with the feelings and stress of work at the media composition coal-face without any potential negative impact on one’s career!

Full details, T&Cs and submission form here.

Thanks for setting this one.

A couple of requests for clarification:

  • It’s not completely clear from the challenge page what form the submission should take. Should it be a video, a stereo audio file, or something else?
  • The challenge text asks for the first four minutes to be scored, but the materials provided run to about 4’50” - to the end of the scene. Should we score the whole thing or only up to the four-minute mark?

I have the same questions that Ed has.

Video format.

Score the whole video.

Looking at the new submission form, there is a check box next to the phrase “I have read and agree to the terms and conditions”. Are these the general terms and conditions of the web site or was the thought to have specific terms and conditions for these challenges? If something specific, are they posted somewhere?

It’s not immediately obvious, but the text “Terms and conditions” in the form is a link pointing to https://thecrowhillcompany.com/competition-terms-and-conditions/

Did not try clicking it. Thank you sir.

So then i provide a youtube link but it insists on an upload?

Anyway, while I am trying to get my entry in, here is the YouTube link for it if anyone is interested.

Please note that I am a rank amateur and just trying these things to learn something new, keep the gears in the ol noggin greased up.

Any thoughts or comments would be welcome.

Question, the “USI text temp” which plays for the text animation, are we keeping that in the video? Because “temp” would suggest we also need to replace that but i just wanna make sure

Hello,
Would it be possible to get a fresh copy of the video without the temp music in it? Thanks!

De-assemble to reassemble appears to be part of the brief on this one. One suggestion is to follow the instructions in this video:

in order to download and use ‘Handbrake’ to create a copy of the video without audio.

Remember to adjust the title of the output file to retain original file for reference.

How are you processing the video? Can you not just mute the original audio?

Hi everyone  please can I just check I haven’t missed anything, there’s this thread, the resource hub page with the downloads and the description, and the mentions at the start of the weekly ring pull podcasts?

It’s not that I think there should be more, just to check  have a lovely Sunday all!

I think I’ve discovered Theo is a time-traveller; is that him in the picture with Dave Smith at NAM?

Hi Ros - as far as I know, that’s correct. Christian had suggested that he might do a briefing video, but to my knowledge that hasn’t been published as yet.
