CHALLENGE INFO:

We were tasked with imagining “What If Hans Zimmer Scored Star Wars?”

Two Worlds of Film Scoring — Melody vs Motion
The original Star Wars sound by John Williams is built on iconic melodies and leitmotifs:

Luke = hope
Vader = power & darkness
Leia = elegance
The orchestra tells the story through melody.

Now flip that perspective.

Hans Zimmer’s approach is different:

rhythm over melody
textures over themes
emotion through motion, pressure, and sound design
:backhand_index_pointing_right: It’s not “a theme for a character” – It’s “the feeling of their journey”

Your Challenge
Create a minimum 45-second track answering:

What would Star Wars sound like if Hans Zimmer had scored it?

Think:

Dark rhythmic engines instead of heroic brass
Pulses, impacts, evolving tension
Hybrid scoring: orchestral + modern cinematic sound design
:backhand_index_pointing_right: It should feel like Star Wars — but from another universe.

Requirements
Use at least one Symphonic Elements plugin
No copyrighted material or uncleared samples allowed
Include a screenshot as proof of Symphonic Elements usage

CONCEPT:

In keeping with the “Star Wars” theme, I composed the score in 3 acts as follows:

Act 1 - “The Clone March”

Act 2 - “Deep Space”

Act 3 - “Jedi Reprise”

CHALLENGE SPONSOR INSTRUMENTS USED:

UJAM instruments used: SE BRAAASS, SE DRUMS, Beatmaker Nemesis, UJAM/BMF Vox Humana

Crow Hill instruments used: Snakes of Russia Venom, Nocturnal Gestures

OTHER NOTES:

This was one of the heaviest scoring projects that I have ever undertaken, at over 100 MIDI VST instrument tracks/layers.
I pushed my i9-14900k with 128gb RAM to the limit, the final Ableton Live project takes over 5 minutes to load.

Nice work Kev! When do you hear the competition results?

Nicely done! There a real width and sense of physical space at the start is very Star Wars. The base sounds make a for really effective tonal shift as well!

Thank you Alistair! According to the UJAM site, the winners will be announced, 4th June!

Stay Tuneful!

I appreciate your time and ears; thank you!

Stay Tuneful!

I remember my grandmother reading me that poem when I was very small - magical piece, thank you Alistair

Well I got 8th place  !!!

In the Google Meet chat for this week’s CYHMN (3 June 2026), @elerimorgan suggested that “innovate, don’t litigate” might be a possible lyric.

Which is my explanation for this nonsense: To the Lead Offender, purportedly by “Lawrence Soote and the Caesar Desiste Brass Band”.

The effects of legal action can be chilling
and might cause those who once respected you to fret.
So listen to a coalition of the willing
and put that motion in the deepest oubliette!

Offender! Offender!
I dare not speak your name!
Offender! Offender!
Go hang your head in shame!
Offender! Offender!
Now judgement day is near
shoot these silly notions to the upper stratosphere!

A better way to get attention
Is to build a new invention.
Innovate, don’t litigate,
and whistle your cares away!

Offender! Offender!
Oh won’t you double-check?
Your head’s so swollen now you have a problem with your neck!
Offender! Offender!
It’s a mistake to over-play
you need firmer footing than a double cut-a-way!

This is absolutely brilliant, @ed.harper !! Bravo!

So awesome to have the lyrics to read whilst listening along to the track!

Something that came up after Storm Kristin that devastated hectares of pine forest in my region in Portugal.

Hey all! It has been very busy lately, but I have made a new synth signal path and created this cool darker sound. It’s moreso to demonstrate the sound, but I may try to make this into a track: Stream Dark by Noah Stockton | Listen online for free on SoundCloud

This is also lovely, can imagine a female humming a melody in there too in some places.

Really good  it definitely conjures up the images of the scene you describe too.
