Some of our past composer challenges have been a little, well… challenging.
Our intention is to present our network of composers with real world scenarios as a way of gaining risk free experience, but we appreciate that they aren’t always easy.
So, we decided to ease you into the new year with a composing challenge that really couldn’t be simpler:
Download the latest FREE Vaults instrument – make some music – send it to us.
Thank you Crow Hill for this Composer Challenge and the lovely Vaults Tuned Gongs.
It’s a strange dimension where inspiration lies and without either the Tuned Gongs, Composer Challenge, and various Crow Hill Youtube content, this tune would not exist!
After revisiting Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring, and playing around with Tuned Gongs, the creation of Gong Gong Gone, by myself, came about!
The track consists of my brief journey into field recording, again thank you Christian for the inspiration, and the atmospheric sound of myself standing in my local high street, tapping a street sign post, an impulse response reverb created in a local tunnel, and there’e even some percussive sounds from a recorded biscuit tin, all along side the Tuned Gongs and other Crow Hill delights.
A mix of guitar sounds includes myself performing a few bits on Fender Nylon, Burns Electric and Crow Hill’s Filth: Guitar Hive, accompanying the Vertical Piano and Nocturnal Gestures. To further enhance the vocal harmonics, I could hear being created from the Tuned Gongs, enter Dot Alison Dulcet Voice and Glass Strings. Further instruments used include: UAD’s Electra 88, Logic’s Studio Bass: Roots Upright and Studio Drums: Scientific Method+.
These are all really good as always Thank you for sharing
I loved this challenge - right threw the kitchen sink at it, so apologies for the shameless revelling in musical stereotypes… and the mix - way beyond me! Still a newbie, so always love to hear thoughts and your amazing super helpful advice, so please do share…
Ahhh, thank you. I started off with loads of melodic loopy bits from the gongs, then trying alchemy out on a gong loop and getting a subby loopy thing I quite liked (couldn’t make it again tho!), then I set myself the challenge of using lots of things in logic I’d never tried before, effects, automating new things, OTT eq, compression, etc (because that seemed in the crow hill spirit of it all) and combining them with instruments I’d not tried/combined in that way too… there’s even my mum’s old treble recorder which I tried to make a really basic sample instrument with!! - hence the kitchen sink!! I learnt so much! Also learnt how much I need to learn… Love these challenges - always make me make something I wouldn’t have dreamt of otherwise! Thank you for listening and for your kind words
Hi all, it’s been a while since I’ve posted but here is my go at the challenge. I was going for a spiritual vibe for this one as that was the inspiration when I first played around with the gongs.
I thought that I would do something with a bit of atmosphere in it for the Tuned Gong challenge, so here it is. I entered it a few days ago last week and its nothing special but something different.
Hi Simon, any chance in the future to have a dedicated topic page to celebrate runners up and winners. Be nice to celebrate their achievements in the home of the Crow Hill Network community.
