Hi,
Was wondering if anyone has any tips for SDD drives?
My 4gb SDD drive recently died an after only a couple of months. I mistakenly bought a cheap one that wasn’t able to cope with running an unreasonable amount of samples for an unhealthy amount of time…
Budget is an issue, but I’m looking to get a reliable one this time and will just have to accept that it is sensible thing to spend money on. I’m considering the EX400U by Corsair or the LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5. For use on a Mac M1 Ma.
Get a Samsung 990 Pro NVME SSD 4tb for around $300 US and put it in a 40gbs usb-c external NVME enclosure. I have used Samsung SSDs exclusively since the advent of SSDs and never had one fail.

I’m also rocking 2x 990s; they’re nice. HOWEVER this is massive overkill for most applications. If you want reliable/cheap-ish storage find a used NAS server.

Agreed LOL, for bulk storage/backup/non-ssd storage I use 3x Seagate Exos X18 16tb SATA drives…I have a giant CPU case on my main rig (people often confuse it for a portable air conditioner LOL)…my backup rig is in a normal case; I use it exclusively for running soft synths through outboard gear. Make sure to get minimum 7200rpm on a non-SSD though, if you plan to run any sample libraries off of it.
Like @Daniel_Van_Dyk have used Samsung SSD’s exclusively and never had an issue.

Thanks for the recommendations I’ve gone for it.
Really glad I only had samples stored on it!
I’ve been using a Samsung T5 1GB and I’ve been happy with it.

What are you wanting to use the SSD for?
I’ve gone for the Samsung 990. It’s just for running orchestral samples in Ableton.
