I think it’s because we needed to recreate the type of music that would normally fit rather do a version that already exists. It had to be something new and fresh reading the brief again. Perhaps the Thomas Newman thing was a red herring ![]()
Mine def would have interfered with dialogue - lots going on in that freq range
I right fell into the overcooking it trap! I have an attempt which prob would have been better in that respect but I’d binned it for being far too simple… it was also not reinventing anything much… I’m up for the challenge! ![]()
![]()
I’ll be creating my next attempt whilst listening to The Fellowship of the Ring Pull as to work around the dialogue! ![]()
Great idea! I like that… might even use it myself ![]()
Playing “Ring Pull” as a test is probably not a bad idea; as long as your track sounds balanced in full context. Working around the vocal range is great but I usually just add on a subtle ducking sidechain unless the full track is essential for the scene. SFX is processed separately to match atmosphere/reverb/etc. for examples, check out HGTV or Food Network clips on youtube; the ducking is usually obvious.
Think the revision idea makes the challenge even more fun. Can you make your great score fit the brief better . It’s the perfect excuse to mess around with the music again ![]()
Here is a paraphrase from the podcast:
Scoring for reality TV such as : Ramsay’s kitchen nightmares,
Looking for : Light Underscore with quality production - Not composer chops.
Vibe:
‘If you imagine some people doing something quite serious, but they are idiots. What music would you put underneath?’ ![]()
Here is a good bit from Ramsay’s kitchen nightmares. So not my thing… but the music seems appropriate. - Just a warning there is lot of swearing in it…
This is what can be considered a “Best of”? (sigh) That is so depressing.
Thanks for your thoughts, though. I hope they update the brief for us so we can be sure, but I suspect from Christian’s monologue that you are right.
Just to add a quick query for Christian / Admin for the challenge extension.
I haven’t finished the full ring pull episode just yet, but Christian mentioned that in a real-life scenario there might often be a re-pitch that is farmed out afresh.
So would I be right in thinking I could submit an entry even though I did not submit one in the first round?
Not sure if I will or not, but thought it worth asking! ![]()
Yes, anyone is free to submit.
It seems there are still a few people unsure of the kind of music we’re looking for or how you would go about researching for a brief like this.
Here is some assistance if needed:
Web search a library music company eg. Extreme Music
Search their website for ‘Pizzicato’ or browse the ‘Reality’ category
Listen to the results for tracks that sound like what the brief is asking for
If you’re still struggling, I would suggest that this album has some good examples.
Thank you for trying, sir. Since I’m obviously one of the “few” and actually find the examples leaving me with more questions than answers, I think I should sit this one out. But I must say that I honestly don’t see how at least one of the entries in this thread (Ros’) doesn’t match both tone and composition with what you just shared.
Thank you Simon! The underscore versions actually are really helpful in understanding what was needed. We just went too full on with melodies and fitting a lot into a short space of time.
Thanks Pat but I think I had too much going on in the wrong frequency ranges, and it’s not really a re-think, and it’s funny not ‘side eye’ (my stomach isn’t strong enough for the meanness!) at least - I’m completely new to all this so I researched in a similar way to Simon’s suggestions but via taxi and some other helpful YouTubers and thought that you would submit that whole and then stem off parts so that when it’s all chopped up and placed under dialogue different parts of different stems can be selected - that wasn’t what was wanted here and that’s cool - the customer is always right!
Tbh this is how I’m learning - I didn’t realise trailer music is a genre so I made the colossus trailer music as if it were a film, so I was totally off brief even before I started re my other assorted beginner type chops and terrible mix
fun tho and learnt masses!
I have always quite enjoyed working in groups with creative projects so perfectly cool to pivot and throw a job out if it needs a re-think x it’s almost part of the brain spark type fun ![]()
My issue here, and where I’m struggling I think in my learner kind of way, is the reinventing part when the palette is so limited - harmonically? Rhythmically? ![]()
good job it’s another week and a bit…… ![]()
Well, best of luck with it. If it matters, the examples have frequency issues like crazy.
If they get the Marshal Brass update fixed, I’ll leave the rest of you to finish this one out. As it is, my main theme in the current project has the Marshal Brass as its core and I’m work stop with MB (old and new) completely broken. I might have to do something just to keep my mind from exploding or wasting the day watching youtube.
I thought your submission was a good underscore, and giving it a new spin according to my bit of (admittedly flawed in places!) research, for what it’s worth - hope you’re able to find the time and inspiration to look at it again if you wanted to
I’ve had my head turned by the latest cue tube offering which looks great fun, and I don’t have much time this month so will do my best to think up something new here too
might end up not managing either but will have had fun and learnt a lot and will be able to see from the new submissions where I could improve so all good
If I don’t get my book project (the one Marshal Brass is on) back on line, I’ll check out the cuetube challenge. This one, I’m probably just mentally blocked by the subject the brief is supposed to be aimed at and tired from too little sleep. Thanks for your encouragement, though. Look forward to what you offer.
Hi everyone. Here’s my submission.
I don’t have much time on my hands these days, but when I saw we’re only supposed to use Bridge Guitar (and maybe pocket strings) for 30-60 seconds, I thought surely I could at least submit something haha. ![]()
I definitely felt like adding more to the track after finishing it though. Perhaps some small, quirky sounds strewn throughout to add a kind of texture behind the plucks.
I also doubt I succeeded at bringing a fresh feel to this kind of underscore. I just wrote what I felt like I might actually hear in a scene while also trying to make it feel kinda thematic/melodic.
Well, might as well at least embarrass myself with what I had before I gave up. Here, in all its non-glory, is my submission. Stream bridge guitar challenge round two by cmopatrick | Listen online for free on SoundCloud
Only Bridge Guitar and plucked setting in Pocket Strings, plus fx.
I will say that writing a generic bed that implies the visual subjects are idiots without actually having a cue to hit is rather less than easy.
I liked the Uk comedy sound and tone of your score, it’s sounded right to me for the challenge. Probably will not take much to turn it into a more underscore theme.
Reality TV really is the worst. It really can’t be good for people
At least the music hints not to take it too seriously, to those unfortunate enough to be watching it.
