Thank you for listening, Leigh!

I realise this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but emboldened by Christian’s enthusiasm on CYHMN last night (29 April 2026), here’s another song from my “Songs from an imaginary Edwardian music hall” project - The Art and Artistry of Amateur Detection: A Primer. This time, the story of a sequence of unsettling murders in a British village.

(There’s also now a playlist of the songs released from the project so far)

You’ve gotta write a musical, Ed! This is fantastic!

Well done Ed. I agree with Eleri’s comments. You most definitely need to do a musical. You’ve got a knack for this style of composition. Bye, the way is that you singing in this composition?

Thank you, Michael (and Eleri and Ali) - I’m not yet convinced about Eleri’s suggestion for writing a musical, but perhaps the seed will flourish one day now that the thought has been planted…

To answer your question - yes, that’s me singing. Almost all of my “Edwardian songbook” songs feature my singing; usually in one of a (very limited) range of regional accents. That’s one of the reasons I’ve been hesitant about sharing them.

Ed, I fully understand your hesitancy and lack of confidence, but I have to advise you that the aural tonality and timbre of your voice as far as I am concerned is really good and does perfectly suit the compositional style of your ‘Edwardian Songbook’. Your voice meets the requirements for your own brief. My advice for you is to some how try and get your work listened to by a publisher by sharing a Soundcloud link of your work with them and see if they can give you some feedback. What have you got to lose, you never know what could come of all your hard work. Stay positive and have a great day. All the best.

Oh, Ed, that’s brilliant. Talk about LMAO at those lyrics (perfectly delivered for the idiom, in my humble opinion), but the music also seems so appropriate for the period. Wherever did you get the inspiration?

Thanks Steve - it’s so gratifying to hear that others find it funny.

As for the question of inspiration - I’m not really certain where it came from. I’d love to know the answer myself, but I’m not sure how hard I dare pull on that thread for fear of breaking it! The best I can do it that it seemed to be the right thing to do at the time (a cop out, but true).

Hello everyone,
This is a Lament for three cellos I composed using Tina Guo acoustic cello.
Because its the same instrument I’ve used a mixture of Sul tasto, Legato and vibrato. As all ways the dream is live musicians.
Thank you for listening,
Michael
Ps I listen to this piece with headphones on and my eyes shut but this is not obligatory :joy:

More “Songs from an imaginary Edwardian music hall”.

This time, a sporting double-header.

First, from the the folk tradition Lord John Tennis, First Earl of Wimbledon - and just in time for the start of the season - an entirely spurious account of the invention of lawn tennis (mostly an excuse for a silly punchline):

Second - “Olympic” James - a tale of sporting heroism where matters are not all above board:

… and I thought the previous song was funny! I’ll never be able to hold a tennis ball in my hand again! Wherever the inspiration for these pieces comes from, mate, hang on to it and thanks for sharing them. Now I’ve finally stopped laughing and got back on my chair, I haven’t lost sight of the wonderful musical arrangements you created either. They marry to the styles of the songs so well and carry the lyric without distracting from it. Outstanding in my opinion.

I meant to say throughout

Hi folks, my previous composition was short for a reason based on the context of a collection set of eleven short and long compositions which I have previously written over the last few months. Some of these compositions like my previous composition which I have previously shared with you all have only used Crow Hill libraries, while some of my other compositions in the collection which I have not shared on this platform use both a mixture of Crow Hill and other developers, and some of my other remaining compositions in the collection don’t use any Crow Hill libraries at all. This composition however, is a little longer and is my next endorsement of using only Crow Hill libraries. I’ve only used Prehistoric Strings, Glass Strings and Small String Gestures for this composition. Please always remember, the context of music is always something to bear in mind and not just the composition alone. I hope you enjoy it and that you all think about your very own personal beautiful memories of the past while closing your eyes and listening and thus hopefully make so many more beautiful memories of your own in the future.

This composition is a little bit longer and unfortunately I did not use any Crow Hill libraries. Even so, I hope you enjoy it.

And for those composers who are still little children at heart. Here is another composition in which unfortunately I did not use any Crow Hill libraries but I still hope you enjoy it.

Fully appreciate that the length of some pieces is governed by a contextual functionality that is not easily reflected in their appearance in this forum, but when your compositions are this beautiful who would not wish there was more to hear? Thank you so much for sharing. You have created another beautiful memory for me.
