Wavering Choir Composing Challenge (CLOSED)

What’s the challenge?

December in Crow Hill Land (Edinburgh). The days are cold, the nights are long. It’s feeling particularly wintry…

For December’s Composing Challenge we would like you to write something ‘wintry’ using the latest instrument in the Vault series: Wavering Choir.

All the details on how to participate can be found here.

Good luck everyone!

On a still, freezing night, the frost slowly forms.

A mixture of Vaults, Pianobook, and LABS instruments, plus one of Christian’s wine-glass samples and some guitar string noises I recorded myself.

The title is stolen borrowed from Coleridge’s Frost at Midnight.

Very ghostly and icy. Very atmospheric. I liked the crackling sounds - were those the guitar string noises you recorded?

Thanks for listening. Yes, the crackling sounds are the guitar noises. I wanted to use actual ice cracking sounds but couldn’t get a satisfying recording - then within 24 hours of my posting this, Dave Hilowitz posted a YouTube video where (amongst other things) he froze a piezo mic into a block of ice, then recorded sounds of it thawing. I didn’t think of that.

Haha! Freezing your mic into a block of ice is proper hard core Foley recording! I wouldn’t have thought of that either.

A Touch of Benjamin Britten about that. Nice

so do we just post our submission here and it’s entered? here’s something i put together with the rest of vaults and i used epic strings for the pizzicatos

Hi, just wanted to write a small floating piece with just sounds from Crow Hill. I did and then I saw this challenge. I hope this qualifies, Wavering Choir is in it. As usual all comments are welcome. Please enjoy.

Stream Journey through the ice mountains by Michael J Kiss | Listen online for free on SoundCloud I’ve tried a medieval feel with the choir, hope its ok

Ooo that was fun.

I’ve tried for an icy, epic kind of feeling with this. Heavy choir (Wavering, of course), Vertical Piano and Concussion Drums feature alongside Albion Tundra and a few bits and bobs from UVI, NI and some lovely tubular bells from BBC SO. Insane levels of reverbs from Valhalla too.

Here is The Unknown Hymn. This uses Wavering Choir and other stuff.

That was a fun challenge and the choir sounds great.

Winter is dark and often quite desolate but also offers some of the most amazing beauty. Tried to capture a bit of both.

Epic end section there Leigh. Did I detect some throat-singing in the mix too?
